Resumen: |
May 8th 1813, the Cadiz Constitution was sworn i the city of San Luis Potosi. The ceremony included the placing of a tableau, which was complemented by a series of allegorical figures whose symbolism and form are found in Cesare Ripa’s “Iconología”. Using a symbolic language and baroque ceremonial, the “Ayuntamiento” or City Hall tried to teach the Potosino people not only about the observance of the new laws, but much more important, to bring new life to the Spanish monarch as the main figurehead of the Spanish monarchic system. With the insurgent or independence movement rising in the New Spain, the ceremony was also an occasion to remind the people that the Spanish crown would not hesitate to use arms against its aggressors. |
