The metabolic syndrome is one of the most important public health problems of the new century and it’s considered by some authors as a worldwide epidemic. The prevalence around the world is estimated between lees than 10 % and 40 %. Latin America reported values of 27% in Mexico and 40.2% in Bolivia; in Ecuador it is 27.7%. In this metabolic disorder, abdominal obesity is the most important of the risk factors, which also leads to dyslipidemia, diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular diseases. A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted with the objective of identify the risk factors for metabolic syndrome in a sample of obese from the Ecuadorian population. The lipid profile values, personal and family pathological antecedents and anthropometric measurements were recorded from the patients' medical history. Based on this information it was determinated that in this sample the 39, 75 % had metabolic syndrome. Also, the most predominant risk factor is abnormal glucose fasting (86 %). In the sample without altered waist circumference, 91 % has some risk of suffering from metabolic syndrome, and only the 4 % of the sample didn’t present any altered value in the biochemical profile, waist circumference and blood pressure. The study evidenced the importance of changes in lifestyle habits aimed to reducing the risk factors identified for metabolic syndrome.
