This study discusses the history of the concept of philanthropia in Greek literature and in the Christian literature up to Clement of Alexandria. This concept was used in Classical and Hellenist Greek since the fifth century before Christ, and was understood chiefly as an attribute of the gods and a true virtue. It was also used in Jewish literature written in Greek, and was subsequently received in Christian literature. In the New Testament, in a text of key importance (Titus 3,4), the term refers to the love of God that is made manifest in the mystery of Christ. The meaning of the term philanthropia thus underwent a radical transformation, gaining considerable depth. The reception of this concept in Christian theology culminated in the work of Clement of Alexandria. Este trabajo aborda la historia del concepto de philanthropía en la literatura griega y en la literatura cristiana hasta Clemente de Alejandría. Este concepto venía siendo utilizado en el griego clásico y helenista desde el siglo V a.C. y se entendía sobre todo como propiedad de los dioses y virtud real. Fue empleado también en la literatura judía escrita en griego y comenzó a ser recibido en la literatura cristiana ya en el Nuevo Testamento aplicada al amor de Dios que se manifiesta en el misterio de Cristo en un texto de importancia capital (Tito 3,4). El sentido del término philanthropía experimenta así una radical transformación y profundización. La recepción de este concepto en la teología cristiana encuentra su punto culminante en la obra de Clemente de Alejandría. |
