Resumen: |
This paper explores the relationship between politics and the history of archaeology in Colombia. Traditional views hold that archaeology mirrors élite interests that search for a legitimation of their rule. This legitimation usually identifies the origin and activities of the élite with the pre-Columbian past. The argument of this paper is that the Colombian élite has never held a homogeneous view about the pre-Columbian past. Both radical indigenism and radical Eurocentrism have been maintained by different sectors of the élite. The paper emphasizes that a number of archaeologicaI interpretations about the past have been advanced in the country, despite élite control of archaeological research. Thus a call is made against relativist positions that would prevent scientific research from teaching us something about the past. |
