Abstract: Gerontology is one of the fields of knowledge dedicated to the study and intervention in the field of aging. It has been facing a changing and increasing complexity of social, scientific, ethical, and political demands. In this article we present a set of questions that challenge the researchers, professionals, and other subjects responsible for the elaboration of public policies for the elderly population. This study is a critical analysis of gerontology based on the identification and discussion of its current dilemmas. In terms of structure, the present text is organized into four themes for reflection: 1) the ethical challenge of the minority; 2) the theoretical-ideological challenge; 3) the challenge of indignation and “judiciousness”; and 4) the challenge of vital re-ritualization. We understand that reflection about these issues is part of a movement for the systematization and discussion of the intellectual inheritance of gerontology.Key words: Gerontology. Aging. Ethics.
