Abstract:This study focuses on types of inferences used in the processes of justification and discovery that are involved in argumentative reasoning and knowledge building. It is hypothesised that people use a deductive structure of the if p, then q type as a convincing strategy when presenting and justifying their opinions. An extract of protocol from a fifthgrade primary classroom discussion about slavery in Brazil during colonial times was used in order to investigate this hypothesis. The analysis focuses on the types of inferences made by one of the students when he justifies and/or explains his views on the topic. The hypothetised deductive inferences can be observed and confirmed when the student justifies his position. However, abductive inferences were found to be often used in the process of hypotheses generation or discovery. This suggests that, for knowledge building, it is necessary to provide students with access to information that allows the generation of explaining hypotheses, as well as opportunities to evaluate the bases which support their ideas.Key words: Inference. Argumentation. Knowledge building. Deduction; abduction. |
