Kierkegaard’s early writings describe the experience of human suffering on the basis of a series of concepts (sadness, sorrow, pain, melancholy) that, in their differentiation, involve the discussion of the romantic view on the relation between spirit, nature, and art. This discussion is linked to the distinction of two tendencies in modern culture: on the one had, the aesthetics of melacholy, whose aspiration is the negation of spirit; on the other, the aesthetics of subjective pain, based on the tension between spirit and sensuality; and oriented towards the concept of anxiety as the limit of aesthetic reflection. |
