In the work of Aristophanes and Homer, Plato finds two prior uses of weaving as a paradigm of politics. The different meaning that this feminine art has in these three authors is expressed in Plato above all through reference to Homer’s account of the death of the claimants to the throne of Ithaca, which was saved by Penelope’s weaving and unweaving. The starting hypothesis for the interpretation of Statesman takes full account of these precedents and Plato’s variation with respect to the feminine. |
