The periodontal disease is, among the maladies, one of the sicknesses with a high percentage of prevalence; it manifests itself in the periodontal level, causing a progressive deterioration of the periodontal tissues and finally the loss of the dental organ. Several investigations have been done throughout the years on the benefits of antimicrobials as adjuvants in periodontal therapy, being the base of many studies and publications of cases where there were good results and others not so good. Tetracyclines are the most used antibiotics to combat periodontal disease, not only for their antimicrobial action, but also for their capacity to reduce inflammation and help the reinsertion of the periodontal fybers. Minocycline is, among the tetracyclines, the one with less adverse effects, both systemically and locally. This study was made in the Pilot Faculty of Odontology of the University of Guayaquil, in a male patient, 37 years old, in which samples were taken before applying the minocycline gel, after the periodontal therapy to determine its efficiency. The gel was left to act for 3 minutes and waited for 2 weeks to perform the measurement of the probing, 29 days from the treatment. The results were very satisfactory, the depth and inflammation were reduced and the periodontal health improved. Minocycline, presented as gel, is efficient as an adjuvant in the treatment of periodontal disease. |
