Resumen: |
Along the lines of a previous work on the connotative use of formular diction in the Hymn to Hermes, and adopting the position of those who defend the possibly intentional use of the formulae of the epos as opposed to their traditional functional conception in verse composition, the author attempts to explain a pair of apparently contradictory expressions regarding the cows, which had been attributed to an impaired use of formular diction. In order to do this, a contextual analysis was made of the total and of each one of the expressions designating the cows throughout the poem, which demonstrates that, on the contrary, there is a high degree of refinement and an important parodic element in the management of the diction.
