The Vetus Latina still poses many questions in philological research. On the one hand, the author analyses the linguistic problems of transcription in Samuel and the degree of integration of proper names in the Latin language. On the other hand, he attempts to study proper names in terms of their being evidence of the translation technique and style of the Vetus Latina. In contrast with the widespread notion of the literalism of these versions a mechanic reproduction of their sources, this paper shows that in Samuel there is some stylistic reelaboration which consists of the preferential selection of the most explicit variants. Thus, the Vetus Latina stresses the tendency toward the explicit expression, which was already present in the Vorlage, the Antiochian Text, indeed, moving away from it and the other sources.
