Resumen: |
This article is dedicated to the development of the Greek dialects from the linguistic stage of the second millennium (i. e. from the eastern Greek and the western dialect arrived at Greece in the XIIIth century) about which another article was devoted in Emerita 44, 1976, p. 1 ss. In the process of creation of the dialects of the first millennium the author states that 1) in the XIIIth century eastern and western Greek were closer than afterwards. This is due to the fact that many innovations (-τι > -σι, for instance) were not yet generalized and some doublets like αρ/ορ were still alive. 2) Between the XIIIth and the Xth centuries there was a close contact among all the Greek dialects. Some innovations (*ku̯o > πο, for instance) spread through the whole Greek language. There are also isoglosses which are common to the Ionic-Attic and Dorian, some of which reached the Arcadian-Cyprian and Aeolian, or, at least, a part of the latter. 3) From the Xth century on, a clear-cut differentiation of the Ionic-Attic was developed, as well as an internal splitting within the Ionic-Attic, the western Greek and the Aeolian.
