Resumen: |
This study describes the main theological and religious features of the Oxford Movement, in order to offer a correct idea of the attempt to reform the Anglican Church which began in 1833 on the initiative of J. Keble, H. Froude, J. Newman and E. Pusey. Much research has been done on the Oxford Movement by both Catholics and Anglicans in recent decades. They have reached sound and important conclusions about some historical aspects and other minor points. But they have not been able to reach a coherent overall picture from the religious-theological point of view. One might even say that the number of divergent and at times irreconcilable interpretations increases with the number of publications. This study is based on the assumption that the ample documentary evidence available allows us to determine exactly the fundamental characteristics of the Tractarian Movement and so arrive at a generally valid and virtually uncontroversial conception of this phenomenon of 19th-century England. The author believes that the true picture of Tractarianism is determined by its theological notes, which clearly distinguish it from other religious tendencies of the same period. These features can be reduced to five: 1. its non-evangelical, dogmatic character, opposed to any form of emotionalism; 2. its non-romantic, but essentially spiritual nature, in the Christian meaning of the word; 3. opposition to any form of State intervention or control over the Church; 4. radical criticism of Protestantism in its various Englishand European forms; 5. its non -fixity- therefore a true movement with particular objectives. This view of the Tractarian Movement, the only true image obtainable if a really critical method is adopted, permits us to resolve the many pseudoproblems and shortcomings of present studies. I. INTRODUCCIÓN: 1. El escenario y los protagonistas. 2. 5. Un verdadero «movimiento» de naturaleza no estacionaria. 6. Un movimiento ajeno al espíritu religioso inglés. IV. UN SISTEMA DOCTRINAL PROPIO. V. LA OPCION ENTRE ROMA y LUTERO. |
